luxury boutique Eighteen97

Welcome to Eighteen97 and our online version of or guest information folder.

We have made this information available online to our guests post Covid 19 lockdown as part of our commitment to safety as information folders have been temporarily removed from ours rooms. If you are staying and would like a hardcopy version just let us know.

We purchased Eighteen97 in January 2014. At the time it had not been permanently lived in for over 40 years. Our renovation project was a bit of a labour of love, with a few tears along the way, before we were able share, what we think, is a lovely house and wonderful location with you. We still have more plans for the house and the gardens, they evolve all the time! No doubt they will take a few years more to complete!

The house was built in 1897 out of the stone from the old Goathland church. It was commissioned by a German classic pianist, Christian Gotleib Padel. He played for the York Symphony Orchestra and this house was built as his holiday home. He used to play recitals in the Reading Room in the village. His time in Goathland was sadly relatively short lived as he left at the start of the First World War and never returned.

Here you will find information about Eighteen97 and the surrounding area, which we hope you find of use during your stay. Please take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the contents, especially those relating to safety and emergency procedures.

If you have any queries, questions or requests please do not hesitate to let us know and we will do our best to help.

We very much hope you will enjoy your stay at Eighteen97.

Tim and Fiona Gardham

Part 3 – The Garden at Eighteen97

As with the rest of the house the garden had been rather neglected for many many years when we purchased in January 2014. We have already had a lot of dead or dying trees removed, can you believe they completely blocked the view at the rear of the house! And whilst we do want to keep a natural feel to the garden we have cleared masses of undergrowth and debris too so we can look to create tranquil areas for you to enjoy.

Our plans keep evolving and will take a number of years to develop. We also want to try to improve the drainage and re-establish the various fruit trees in the orchard area so we can add more fruits from the garden to our breakfast menu.

In the meantime please enjoy the garden, keeping to the left side as you look out from the dining room windows. We have a selection of garden games, boules, quoits and croquet, just let us know if you would like to use them.

Do be aware that there are a lot of uneven surfaces and it does get wet after rain and as we have to say, its use by you is entirely at your own risk.

Of course if you have any ideas for a particular area please do share them!

Part 4 – Eco – Awareness at Eighteen97

Many of us are increasingly aware of the impact our actions and day to day lives have on both our immediate and wider Environment. We have made a conscious decision at Eighteen97 to try our very best to be aware of any such factors, whilst being mindful not to impact on the enjoyment of your with us.

We add a simple Reduce, Recycle and Reuse policy and we hope you will join us in ‘doing our bit’ to help our wonderful world.

Lights – Where our light fittings allow we do use low energy light bulbs. Please remember to switch off lights when not in use and when you leave your room.

Water – Yorkshire tap water is excellent and to help cut down on bottle wastage and recycling we now provide fresh filtered tap water for you to enjoy in your room. We also catch rainwater for use in the garden.

Waste – We recycle all waste wherever possible in accordance with local authority collections and in addition to this recycle aged linens etc. You can help by placing newspapers, plastic and glass bottles by the side of your waste bin for recycling, this ensures they are not contaminated by other waste.

Towels – Millions of towels are unnecessarily washed in hotels across the globe everyday. At Eighteen97 we do not look to change towels daily but will or course change them on a regular basis during longer stays. If you do need new towels everyday we will of course oblige but we do make a small charge per change for this extra service.

Bathrobes – At present we are popping bathrobes in your room but can supply on request.

Bedlinen – For guests staying longer than 6 nights we do look to change bedlinen at the midpoint of your stay unless you tell us you are happy for it to remain a little longer.

Thank you for your help and co-operation
